Advance Directives

As a patient’s condition worsens, it may be harder for them to communicate their wants and needs in terms of care at the end-of-life. In this month’s issue of Clinical Geriatrics, our editor-in-cheif, Dr. Steven Gambert, worked with two of his colleagues to discuss the importance of advance directives and things like living wills in hospice and long-term care facilities. While the importance of advance directives is becoming common knowledge throughout the medical community, physicians aren’t working with their patients to help create them, as they believe patients have already worked with attorneys to draw these documents. In the article “Advance Directives Revisited,” the authors describe not only the important of advance directives, but they also break down terminology and requests typically included.
